What does it mean to be hospitalized at Newport Harbor Animal Hospital?

Sometimes, pets are too sick to be treated on an outpatient basis, need medications or intravenous (IV) fluids that may only be administered in a hospital setting.

Our protocol for pets admitted to the hospital is as follows:

1. A starting estimate will be provided with the best guess of what treatments and tests will be done. This may change as your pet responds or if different care or tests are needed. If one is not provided - just ask and we will get one for you. (A deposit of ½ of this estimate will be taken at admission to the hospital)

Feel free to ask your current bill total at ANY time.

2. Your pet will be placed into our treatment room (unless they require a larger kennel, a quiet area or need to be our isolation ward). This allows us to keep constant watch during the daytime for any problems that may arise. We monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, breathing issues, abnormal neurologic signs, etc.

3. After regular business hours (7 am - 7 pm Monday - Friday, 7 am - 5 pm Saturday & 9 am - 5 pm Sunday)

A doctor will not be present in the building. However, a kennel attendant will always be in the building. They will be attending to all the hospitalized and boarding animals along with performing their other duties around the hospital. They perform treatments and give medications prescribed by the doctor.

If any concerns arise, they will call the ‘On Call’ doctor for advice. The ‘On Call’ doctor is not available to discuss the case or answer questions overnight for the pet owner.

After hours, you may call at any time of the night and press ‘3’ to speak with the overnight attendant to check in on your pet. They will not be able to give you any advice but can tell you if your pet is resting comfortably. If they do not pick up, please be patient and call back in a few minutes, they may be attending to pets and unable to get to the phone at that moment.

4. For insurance reasons, pets may not be visited or discharged after business hours.

5. You may visit your pet in the hospital during regular business hours. Please be aware that we normally do examinations and treatments between 7 and 8 am and 6:30 to 7 pm. During these times, you may be asked to wait to see your pet until the exam and treatments are done. HOWEVER, if your pet is in the isolation ward due to an infectious disease, you will not be able to visit directly with your pet but may look through the viewing window.

6. Updates: At a minimum, you will receive daily updates on your pet, often twice daily.

If you have questions at any time during business hours, please call (949) 631-1030.

7. We are not responsible for lost or damaged belongings during your pet’s stay (e.g. Blankets, Toys or Stuffed Animals). We request you take any leash or collar home with you while they stay with us.

8. In the event your pet requires CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), how would you like us to proceed? (Additional charges may apply) Check One:
