Dr. Tom grew up in rural upstate New York. His life long passion for animals originated growing up in a family with farming roots and a house full of pets. He grew up with a beagle named Adam and a calico cat named Peanuts. Adam was his constant companion as he roamed the fields and delivered newspapers as his first job. Adam knew his country paper route as well as he did, often taking short cuts to arrive ahead of him. Adam would often ward off an aggressive canine or two who made it their life's mission to chase after a fifth grader on a bike in the middle of nowhere!
When Tom was in high school he volunteered at a local animal hospital. Dr.Rapp soon hired him to work in the kennels. He always loved animals but now he began to realize the amazing bond shared between owners and their pets. To this day, the bond between all of you amazing pet owners and your four legged friends is the most prized part of every day.
Dr.Tom received his veterinary education at Iowa State University. He is happy to serve as a clinical professor at the Western University College of Veterinary Medicine. You will notice students with him often when visiting our hospital.
In 2007-8 he served as the president of The American Animal Hospital Association.
He is married with two adult sons, Adam and Steve. His wife Debbie spent many a late night in surgery with him early in his career. He and Debbie love running and their dog Marley leads the way. Marley comes to work at the hospital every day. She can be found lounging in Dr.Carpenter's office and soaking in the attention of our wonderful staff.
